Your elbows are subject to damage from overuse, trauma and sports injuries. Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), for example, may be the best-known elbow injury but your elbows are susceptible to all kinds of fractures, bursitis, fracture-dislocations, tendonitis and overuse or throwing injuries. Baseball pitchers experience more elbow injuries than most other athletes due to overuse or the hyperextension of the joint. It’s not uncommon for a pitcher to hurl more than 100 pitches in a single baseball game.
Osteoarthritis of the elbow is a common condition among older adults. This can be caused by a previous injury, elbow dislocation or fracture. Most commonly, however, osteoarthritis of the elbow result from the normal wearing away of the joint cartilage due to age and overuse activity. If you experience severe aching in the elbow joint, pain after extensive use, reduced elbow range of motion, joint stiffness or pain that seems to increase during humid weather, the orthopedic doctor may ask you to consider elbow surgery.
